Warhorse powerlifters are hungry to compete this season. The excitement thrown into the sport of powerlifting is unreal.  They prepare every week for every meet. Their first meet was this past Saturday, Jan. 14, in Carrizo Springs.

“I start preparing for this sport right after football season ends,” senior Austin Soto said. “I take no breaks, and work hard day in and day out in the weight room.”

Even as exciting as powerlifting meets are they are just as intense. Being a powerlifter takes drive, hard work, and dedication. These athletes have the will power to improve and get better.

“My individual goal for the season is to definitely qualify for regionals and hopefully maybe move on to state,” junior Steven Ramirez said.

The Horses had a great season last year with six boys advancing to regionals and one going to state. Soto was a state qualifier and had an amazing junior year season.

“The biggest goal I have this season is being a state champion,” Soto said. “That’s what I have been working for throughout my four years.”

Setting and reaching goals is one of the apparent aspects of powerlifting. Bettering themselves is what these athletes strive for.

“I expect a lot out of my boys, we always want to improve from the year before,” Coach Paul Gomez said. “We as a team want to higher the number of boys going to regionals and maybe send more than one to state.”
